The wines served at The Red Hen have been carefully selected to reflect the restaurant's philosophy as well as to accentuate Chef Yoder's menu.

The list focuses on wines that come from vineyards using organic and biodynamic methods, hand-harvesting, with a minimum of additives or manipulation in the fermenting process, allowing each wine to express the natural complexity of its place of origin.

Food is not an abstraction. It comes from someplace. A lamb shank from Brian and Colleen Jones' farm is an authentic product of the Shenandoah Valley and tastes better for it.

Wine, likewise, has the uncanny and mysterious power to express the unique qualities of its place-- the French call it terroir. To concoct a wine in one place meant to mimick the wine of another place (and pander to the particular pallate of one wine critic) is just plain wrong, on so many levels.

We agree with wine writer Alice Feiring when she says that she is looking for "the Leon Trotskys, the Philip Roths, the Chaucers and the Edith Whartons of the wine world. I want my wines to tell a good story. I want them natural and most of all, like my dear friends, I want them to speak the truth even if we argue. With this messiah thing going on, I'm trying to swell the ranks of those who love the differences in each vintage, who abhor homogenization, who want wines that make them smile, think, laugh, and feel sexy."

These "natural wines" represent a new and exciting counter-trend in wine that we're thrilled to share with our patrons. Distinctive beers on tap and bottled, as well as a full bar, are also available.
